  • Chosen In Jesus

    Author -There are two authors for the lyric of this hymn:

    Josiah Conder wrote the 2nd half of stanzas 1 and 3. (You can recognize the older forms of English in the portion he wrote)

    Joseph R. Terrell, pastor of Grace Community Church.

    Many years ago I found Mr. Condor's portion of this hymn set to the last half Mr. Lowden's tune. As a youngster I had always liked this tune and the church of my youth often sang it to the words, "Living for Jesus." All the words not written by Conder were written to more fully describe the glorious doctrine of God's sovereign election of His people.

    As an interesting note: Sometime after I had written my portion of this lyric, I noticed that in each stanza, the first part is testimony to men and the second part a prayer to God.

    Composer: Carl Harold Lowden, 1883-1963

    1.Chosen in Jesus, before earth was made,
    Destined to glory that never shall fade;
    Holy and blameless, before Him I'll be;
    For God's rich blessings have fallen on me.
    "Tis not that I did choose Thee,
    Ffor, Lord that could not be,
    This heart would still refuse Thee
    hadst Thou not chosen me;
    My heart owns none before Thee,
    For Thy rich grace I thirst,
    This knowing: if I have loved Thee,
    Thou must have loved me first.

    2.Dead in transgressions wherein I once trod,
    Dead to the knowledge of my sin and God,
    Captured by Satan, in bondage was I,
    Wrath was my portion, 'till Jesus came by!
    Your love had no beginning, No cause in me was found,
    That you should choose to save me,
    A sinner strongly bound;
    But grace not earned or sought for,
    Was purposed for my soul,
    For me salvation bought,
    For Christ has paid the awful toll.

    3.God, who, in mercy, had pity on me;
    Punished my sins in His Son on the tree;
    In heav'nly places, I'm seated with Him,
    For I was chosen, predestined in Him!
    'Twas sov'reign mercy called me
    And taught my op'ning mind;
    The world had else enthralled me,
    To heav'nly glories blind.
    Thou from the sin that stained me,
    Hast cleansed and set me free,
    Of old thou hast resolved for me
    That I should live to Thee.
