Prayer
and Politics
I
exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications,
prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made
for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority;
that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all
godliness and honesty. 1 Timothy: 2.1,2
The
words, "first of all" stand as a beacon
to what is of greatest importance in the believer's
concern with politics: prayer. Worldlings are limited
to petitioning their government for "redress
of grievances" or must resort to protest and
demonstrations. But the believer can appeal directly
to the highest court, the Supreme Authority of All
the Universe, his Heavenly Father. The King's heart
is in the hand of the Lord, and the Lord turns it
however He pleases.
It
is a duty, but more than that, a great privilege to
pray for those who rule over us in earthly things.
We pray for them that God might save them for God
desires to save men from all ranks of society. How
blessed is that nation whose leaders fear the Lord!
And we pray for them that they may govern in such
a way that we may live our lives quietly and peaceably
as we worship God with all sincerity and devotion.
What more could we ask for in this life: a quiet and
peaceful existence worshipping the Lord.
