No
Fear of God
"...there
is no fear of God before their eyes."
(Romans
3:18)
And I am not surprised, for the God we feel compelled
to fear is unknown to them (there is none who understand),
and the god who has been put in His place is not worthy
of fear. The glory of God is that which provokes fear
in men, and the god believed on by most has no glory.
He has no glory in his holiness for it is told to
men that by adherence to a law they may satisfy this
god's holy demands. There is no glory in his power,
for it is frequently taught that this god "has
no hands but your hands, no feet but your feet...etc,"
and that he wants you to do this that or the other,
but your will can frustrate his. There is no glory
in his grace, for it is necessary that you qualify
yourself for it by rising above simple sinnerhood;
and that you must cooperate with it, or God cannot
save you even if he wants to. Such a god is not worthy
of the least of our attention, much less fear and
worship. But the God of the Bible, revealed in Christ
Jesus, is of awesome character. He is holy beyond
imagination; so much so that the best of our race
who have confronted Him have cried "Woe is me.."
He is glorious in His awesome power, for "He
spoke and it was, He commanded and it stood forth;"
and "He doeth as He will in the armies of heaven
and among the inhabitants of the earth and none can
stay His hand or say unto Him, "What doest thou?""
And, He is most glorious in His grace, for, "he
is gracious to whom he will be gracious and merciful
to whom He will be merciful. There is not a Son of
Adam who can, in any way or by any effort or act of
their will compel or obligate God to be merciful and
gracious. And there is not a Son of Adam who is so
corrupt and rebellious that God is unable to save
Him if He wills it. Even if it be a Saul of Tarsus
who hates the Lord Jesus with all his heart; a sinner
cannot withstand the sovereign grace of God. Every
one of us is in God's hand to do with AS HE WILLS.
Let each of us fear Him and beg His mercy!
